Our standard 130mm x 80mm air to surface cold plate (CP) assembly, P/N AS13080, integrates thermoelectric modules to actively cool, heat or maintain precise surface temperatures on a milled flat surface plate. A high performance heat sink and fan handle the waste heat. Typical uses include direct contact cooling or processes requiring isothermal surface control. Very stable surface temperatures can be maintained with a feedback temperature controller and embedded sensor. Temperatures can be controlled over a typical range of approx. -10oC to + 80oC.
How They Work – Our solid-state, cold plate assembly maintains a near isothermal profile using a uniform thermoelectric module circuit properly positioned between a milled flat, aluminum surface plate and heat sink. The thermoelectric circuit precisely extracts heat from the plate which is also sufficiently thick to promote good lateral thermal conduction and maintain thermal uniformity. With a feedback temperature controller (and an embedded sensor near the plate mid-line) precise temperatures can be controlled across a relatively wide temperature range (typically -10C to +80C). Bi-directional temperature control is also possible since the thermoelectrics allow a reversible cooling/heating response. This bi-directional capability is especially advantageous for cycling applications or where the desired set point oscillates near ambient. Cold plate subassemblies are commonly used for contact cooling of hot surfaces or where a stable and precise temperature is required on a surface. Some typical applications areas include life sciences and medical testing, electronic testing, thermal calibration equipment and others. Design Details – Our cold plate assembly (P/N AS130X80) ensures good and reliable performance through the use of high quality thermoelectric modules, a high fin density, low resistance heat sink (for optimal heat removal), a high-flow/pressure DC fan with shroud to ensure near uniform air flow through the heat sink fin array. Our type 6063 aluminum surface plate is milled smooth and flat and then is further dark anodized for protection. A small diameter, deep blind hole is included along the plate side for convenient temperature sensor placement. Our standard air-surface chiller is available in an 130mm x 80mm footprint, however, other cold plate sizes can be custom produced. Our surface plate provides 90 watts of cooling (Qc) at Vin = 12 volts and at T-ambient = 25oC (DT=0oC). Options – Various surface plate configurations and sizes can be produced to meet your specific application needs. Custom mounting patterns can be added to facilitate direct coupling of a cooled surface plate to your equipment. Alternative surface coatings or no surface coating are product options.
