Custom Thermoelectric Cooling Designs

Our Services
We offer engineering support in all phases of product development, from conceptual design, through prototyping, performance testing and complete product manufacturing.  We carefully analyze your unique thermal management need and then provide recommendations promptly.  If you have an existing assembly or chiller design that you are not completely satisfied with, we can work with you to develop an improved and lower cost approach.  Our primary goal is to develop products that satisfy your needs, perform well with high reliability and that are attractively priced.

Approach
We combine accurate performance modeling with our extensive thermal management experience to develop effective product solutions.  Our in-house computer models allow us to simulate designs accurately and converge on solutions quickly, thereby reducing design iterations, development timing and overall costs.   After completion of the conceptual design phase we generally build and test prototypes to verify performance prior to transitioning to the manufacturing phase.

Design Options
Most of our product designs employ solid-state thermoelectric coolers (TEC’s) to actively transfer heat and precisely control temperature.  Other cooling technologies, however, can be employed and in some cases are advantageous depending on the specific application requirements.  Thermoelectric-based systems, however, do offer advantages, such as compactness, low noise and vibrations, inherent simplicity, no CFC’s and high reliability.  The very compact and modular nature of thermoelectric assemblies also facilitates easy expansion of cooling capacity, as needed.

Typical Applications for Thermoelectric Chillers
Thermoelectric-based designs offer many advantages for thermal management applications.  They include high cooling densities (small footprints), mechanically quiet – no moving parts (except for external fans or pumps), no Freon – all solid state construction, bi-directional temperature control (module control is reversible – can cool or heat from same surface), precise, stable temperature control and high reliability (TEC life >200K hours MTBF).

Some Common Applications Include:

  • Heat removal in air or similar environment using air-to-air cooler designs.
  • Fluid cooling using either air-to-liquid and liquid-to-liquid chillers.
  • Solid surface (cold plate) chillers for direct contact cooling.
  • Isothermal cold plates, often used with biological or chemical samples to regulate or hold temperatures.
  • Laser cooling and temperature control with water based chillers.
  • Re-circulating, closed system air chiller for precise temperature control of an atmosphere.
  • Humidity reduction and humidity control designs.
  • Precision temperature-controlled surfaces for testing and evaluation purposes.
  • Bi-directional temperature operation and thermal cycling designs.
  • Heat pump assisted designs with high energy efficiency and thermal stability.

Many application possibilities exist…

Key Attributes of Our Designs
We employ high quality, high performing thermoelectric modules (TECs) in all our assemblies.  They have high DT capabilities, possess internal diffusion barrier layers (to mitigate internal diffusion/contamination effects), high temperature solder (lead-free) are lapped and perimeter sealed, exhibit solid cooling performance and power efficiency with proven reliability.

We use custom designed, high performance heat sinks (with high fin aspect ratio) in our standard air-based designs.  These heat sinks exhibit near highest heat sinking capacity/area for air based cooling.  (We use our in-house performance modeling to develop effective heat sink designs.)

For most liquid-based cooling applications, we employ our extruded aluminum liquid plate.  This liquid plate possesses a high internal wetted surface area with good unrestricted flow characteristics which results in low thermal resistance at reasonable fluid flow rates.  (We can provide alternative liquid plate materials and designs for applications with more aggressive or specific corrosion requirements.)

We use corrosion resistant, sturdy materials in our designs (aluminum, stainless steel and molded ABS) for ancillary items like ducts and shrouds. We can provide other materials, as required by your application.

Other design options, e.g., heat pipes, specialized ducting, unique blower designs or user-specified components can be incorporated into our designs.  Please discuss your unique application requirements with us.

The quality of the components employed in these subassemblies has a strong influence on the performance of thermoelectric-based cooler assemblies.  We design all our assemblies with high-performing components to maximize the system response.  Our active sourcing and in-house manufacturing enable us to offer our products at very competitive pricing.

How Our Product Development Process Works
Generally the customer contacts us to discuss their specific thermal management need.  We review the customer’s application needs carefully to identify effective solutions. We then outline a product approach and discuss options with the customer.

When possible, we try to adapt standard component and subassemblies to meet the application needs since this offers advantages in terms of timing, proven performance and lower costs.  If a greater level of customization is required, we will then identify a design best suited for their application.

We generally use in-house models to simulate performance and to further refine the proposed solution.  Once the design concept is finalized (and accepted by the customer) we build and evaluate the chiller prototype.  The prototype assembly undergoes performance testing and is refined as required.  The performance of the final version is verified and results documented.

If the proposed design and testing results are acceptable, we then develop a manufacturing proposal for this product.  In all our product development efforts, we strive to maintain a good level of communication with customers so that we fully understand their particular needs and provide the most effective product solutions.
